Job Summary:
The principal serves as an educational leader, overseeing daily operations, managing budgets, shaping school policies, fostering a safe environment, and collaborating with staff, students, and parents. Their role is pivotal in promoting academic excellence and student success. Additionally, they are responsible for continuous improvement planning, ensuring alignment with the strategic plan. Their instructional leadership drives effective teaching practices, while managing personnel and maintaining the school facility.
Essential Responsibilities Specific to this Job:
•
Supervises, evaluates and provides instructional direction to all staff in such a way as to implement the total curriculum in relation to the students attending this school.
•
Organizes the school in such a way as to provide for an optimum learning environment and experiences for students in both curricular and extracurricular programs.
•
Assign duties and responsibilities to the assistant principals and other key personnel in order to maintain an orderly day-to-day operation.
•
Manages appropriated and non-appropriated funds to ensure accomplishment of school programs.
•
Provides appropriate in-service programs for staff which concentrate on achieving school and School Board goals.
•
Provides effective public relations and communications within the school and the community.
•
Evaluates and supervises staff in order to maintain a level of competence to ensure the fulfillment of the education goals.
•
Coordinates the use of the central office staff to develop and maintain effective school programs and services.
•
Establishes and maintains effective school discipline.
•
Ensures the provision of appropriate extracurricular activities for all students.
•
Manages the operation and maintenance of building and grounds.
•
Assumes a leadership role in the development and implementation of the continuous improvement plan and budget in cooperation with the school advisory council.
•
Implements, monitors and assists in the evaluation of the division-wide curriculum action plan at the local school level.
•
Utilizes a variety of data sources to assist in decisions for enhancing student, staff, and/or program performance.
•
Creates and sustains a positive, inclusive learning environment that values cultural and linguistic diversity to support all students and staff.
•
Collaborates closely with the Preschool Department to ensure access to wraparound services for families, including family support , social-emotional, and health, and nutrition resources.
•
Collaborates with elementary school principals and staff to ensure a smooth and effective transition to kindergarten.
•
Leads and supports family and community engagement efforts.
•
Meets the specific requirements of Head Start and Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) grants.
•
Implements Virginia Quality Birth to Five (VQB5) requirements, including the use of CLASS data to evaluate teacher and program performance.
•
Performs the responsibilities charged to the principal by the local School Board.
Must hold a Virginia teaching certificate and endorsed in Admin & Supervision PreK-12. If a current VA Postgraduate Professional License is not currently held, the candidate must hold a reciprocal out-of-state certification with a comparable Administration and Supervision PreK-12 endorsement.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Behaviors:

Knowledge of preschool instructional processes, public relations, school finance, school law, personnel management, administration, supervision, curriculum, and procedures in special education.
•
Demonstrates leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary to work effectively with students, teachers and parents
•
Demonstrates knowledge of VQB5, VKRP, and CLASS assessment systems.
•
Knowledge of Head Start and Virginia Preschool Initiative grant requirements and compliance expectations.
