The Executive Director will be responsible for advancing the statewide mission and executing the overall strategic vision and management of the Sandra Dunagan Deal Center for Early Language and Literacy. The vision, Propelling Every Georgia Child to Read Proficiently and Beyond, will guide the Executive Director in building on the firm foundation of the center and to advance the collaborative work of improving the reading achievement of students through third grade. The Executive Director works closely with leaders throughout the state of Georgia, the Deal Center Governing Board, Georgia College & State University’s Office of Academic Affairs and the John H. Lounsbury College of Education. The Executive Director leads operational objectives and provides inspiring and compelling strategic leadership to the Deal Center. The Executive Director is responsible for all aspects of the Deal Center’s work in support of key research and policy drivers to address factors that impact early language and literacy development. This includes developing and supporting statewide professional development programs for educators of children ages birth through age eight, building a strong early language and literacy research agenda to support statewide strategies to improve literacy outcomes and supporting community efforts to enhance literacy. This also includes communicating directly with national and state audiences and media, formulating strategic alliances with non-profit organizations, initiating key partnerships with state and private universities, as well as the state's technical college system; overseeing evaluation and research as it relates to Deal Center programs; and maintaining enthusiasm for the enhancement of early language and literacy in children from birth through age 8 in Georgia. The ideal candidate is a collegial, consensus-building, visionary leader who is comfortable with providing the strategic direction for a unique Center that provides statewide, early language and literacy leadership.

Responsibilities
Leadership - 25
-Lead all aspects of the Deal Center and its goal to be the research and training language and literacy hub for the state of Georgia.
-Contribute to shaping early language and literacy policymaking by engaging legislators, government officials, non-profit leaders, and other relevant constituents.
-Communicate directly with national and state audiences and media, formulating strategic alliances with non-profit organizations, and initiating key partnerships with state and private universities, as well as the state's technical college system, to position the Deal Center as the leader in early childhood literacy programming and research.
-When relevant and necessary, engage externally across the southeast and beyond to inform discussions about policies related to early childhood and literacy.
-Oversee evaluation and research as it relates to Deal Center programs, and the advancement of early language and literacy in Georgia.
-Monitor, support, and evaluate the progress of the Center’s funded activities, and seek grant-funding, when appropriate, to support the work of the center.
-Provide leadership and oversight of the major areas of work for the organization (policy, research, professional development, and communications).
-Serve on the Academic Leadership Team and will serve on other committees as requested.
Management and Supervision - 25
Hire, lead, develop, and evaluate the Deal Center team to develop and implement the mission of the Sandra Dunagan Deal Center for Early Language and Literacy.
Strategic Planning - 15
-Create and revisit a comprehensive strategic plan.
-Develop performance metrics consistent with organizational goals and objectives for the Deal Center's management team.
-Create and implement support mechanisms to enable team members to achieve these goals.
-Encourage, support, and develop evaluation metrics that determine success on outcomes to monitor the Center's effectiveness.
-Utilize research, specifically the framework of implementation science, to strengthen early language and literacy policy and support as appropriate.
Budget - 15
-Ensure that appropriate fiscal controls and procedures are in place and that key resources are available to properly fund and manage the Center, in conjunction with Georgia College's fiscal office.
-Identify and secure new sources and streams of income for the Center to meet short and long-term goals.
-Align budgeting and financial procedures with the mission and vision of the Center.
-Complete all budgeting and financial reports as required.
Communication - 20
-Communicate regularly with all internal and external stakeholders.
-Regularly communicate, via website, marketing material, social media and other forms of communication, the mission, work, and impact of the Deal Center.
Educational Requirements
Master's degree in early language, literacy, K-12 school administration or equivalent education.
Other Required Qualifications
-Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills, including a well-developed sense of equity and integrity.
-Knowledge of the research in the area of early language and literacy and evidence-based strategies to support and enhance language and literacy development in young children birth to age 8.
-A strong commitment to the statewide mission of the Deal Center.
-Experience in communications and/or marketing to external audiences and constituents.
-A strong commitment to the university and academic community.
-Experience that includes significant administrative and budget experience.
-A strong track record working with multiple stakeholders.
-Extensive knowledge of a balanced literacy framework.
Required Experience
Ten (10) years of leadership experience in early language and literacy, higher education, foundations, or related nonprofit organizations of similar size to the Deal Center.
