Westminster School for Young Children in Nashville, TN is seeking a dedicated individual to serve as its director. The director must have the academic qualifications and personal commitment to the church’s mission for the school, as well as be prepared to be the school’s operational and pedagogical leader. Specifically, the school prefers the director to hold a master’s degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field and have at least five years of teaching experience as well as managerial experience. The candidate should be familiar with the Presbyterian tradition and willing to work with the church to support these traditions as appropriate for the school.
Founded in 1946 by Wilfred Fischer, Westminster School for Young Children was Nashville’s first Protestant Kindergarten at the Westminster Presbyterian Church. The next year the school moved into the Church’s newly constructed Christian Education Building and began instruction with 45 children all in one large room. Over the years enrollment continued to grow and the school now serves nearly 300 children, ages 1 to 5, and employs over 40 teachers and administrators. Westminster teachers use the classroom environment, planning and family input to implement a set of content-based goals. Content areas include language, math, social-emotional, fine and gross motor physical development, science, social studies, health, and visual and dramatic arts. Goals are organized along a "stream of learning" by approximate age level and this stream is designed to reflect the general asymmetry of children's development. This allows teachers and families to understand how skills and knowledge build over time through multiple experiences. Westminster School for Young Children partners with its families to provide developmentally-appropriate preschool education in a respectful, creative, nurturing, Christian environment.
