Head Start for Kent County, located in Grand Rapids, Michigan is seeking Teacher Assistants. This is a full-time, hourly position, reporting to the Site Administrative Manager and their designated Site Supervisor.
Head Start for Kent County is a non-profit organization and the grantee for the Head Start and Early Head Start programs. Our mission is to deliver comprehensive services to low income, multi-cultural children ages five and under and their families, promoting their well being and development. The Agency provides transportation, early childhood education, health, nutrition, mental health, speech and social services resources at our 10 sites located throughout Kent County. With an annual budget of over eighteen million dollars, we serve over 1,500 children and their families and employ more than 300 staff.
The Teacher Assistant ensures the implementation of the Head Start program is a safe environment for children in accordance with the performance standards by meeting the physical, social, intellectual, emotional and cultural needs of each enrolled child in partnership with parents.
Assists with the implementation of education in all classroom activities
Works cooperatively with teaching staff in planning and performing classroom activities
Instructs children in practices of personal hygiene and other self help skills
Assists in meal preparation, clean up and serves as a role model at meal times
Implements positive redirection and behavior guidance
Works one-on-one with children needing individual attention
Ensures safe classroom environment
Support to Teacher:
Assist the teacher to ensure that facilities are maintained according to health and sanitation regulations
Conduct home visits with teacher and participates in Parent/Teacher Conferences when necessary
Assist teacher with recruitment of children
Working with Parents:
Assist parents with completing enrollment and health forms
Empower parents by enhancing parenting skills and parent/child relationships
Attend parent meeting to actively support parent participation in program implementation
Conduct a minimum of two home visit and two Parent Teacher Conferences per program year
Teacher Assistants with Head Start for Kent County must have one of the following:
Child Development Associate (CDA) credential;
Be enrolled, and provide documentation proving enrollment to the HR Manager and/or Training Specialist, in a CDA credentialing program that will be completed within two (2) years; or
Have an Associate or Bachelor degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development or be enrolled in a program leading to such a degree
